What is it?* A subordinate clause used as an adjective
* Modifies a noun/pronoun (called the antecedent) * ALWAYS follows the noun/pronoun it modifies * Answers: Which one? What kind? |
How to ID it?* Introduced by a relative pronoun or adverb
-who -whom -whose -which -that -where/when (adverbs) * NEVER at the beginning of a sentence |
Exceptions?*The relative prounoun is understood
ex. Is that the game you bought? Is that the game (that) you bought? |
Examples:
1. John suggested a novel that was outstanding
a. identify your subordinate and independent clauses: in this example we have 1 independent: John suggested a novel and 1 subordinate:that was outstanding
